The Tale of Munjya

You might have heard of a ghost that is in love so desperately that it can't leave the human world? Would you believe it if there were a spirit who took up a comfortable position in frightening fellow travellers and enjoyed playing pranks on the innocent passers-by?

One of the most horrifying regional tales of the torturous spirit is said to be in the Konkan region of Maharashtra, where the spirit is said to haunt and dwell in the ancient peepal trees and terrorise both locals and wildlife, the Munjya. It is about the unfortunate death of a young boy before he could spend his youth life. He is said to be cursed not to leave this earth, and the young man's spirit turned into a mischievous spirit, then a foul spirit.

This spirit is usually portrayed as an innocent ghost who just wants company, but some stories portray it as enjoying playing games with easy passers-by.

In 2024, Bollywood released the comedy-horror movie with the same name, Munjya, that features a much more egocentric, narcissistic and selfish type of ghost, recreated with the creativity of the filmmakers' team.

The Tale of Munjya

According to folklore, a young boy from a village on the Konkan coast had received the Upanayan (sacred thread ceremony in Hindu traditions) and died (at a young age). The young boy had the same aspirations as all boys — love, marriage and children.

However, fate had other plans.

Soon after the ritual, the boy died, and his unfulfilled soul was unable to find peace and hovered near the place of his death. From then on, inspired by the Munja grass and the young soul, the Munjya was created — the ghostly entity.

According to folklore, it is said to possess a Peepal tree and lurk around, waiting for an unassuming wanderer to arrive at its home (Peepal tree); that's when the trickery begins.

It is said that it loved teasing everyone who ever passed by its home, by making noises, indulging in childish giggles, or even beckoning the unaware wanderer from a distance. Some versions of this myth state that the Munjya throws stones at the passing stranger or makes them walk in circles around the tree until they end up in tired.

Although the Munjya is believed to be a mischievous spirit, crossing or breaking its tree rules is a serious offence, and one can expect a horrifying experience if one does so.

The locals think that Munjya could be pacified by building a stone platform around the tree and making offerings, such as milk and puffed rice. They were given to the spirit, and they tied sacred threads around the tree.

And thus, they believed Munjya continued to be both revered and feared by the villagers, as they only knew of him from stories passed down from generation to generation.

Why Is the Story of Munjya So Interesting?

What is so fascinating about the legend is that the Munjya isn't simply a boring ghost looking to frighten you. It is about one's childhood, all those things you wish you had done in life before dying.

Unlike other terrifying ghosts and demons, the Munjya himself was not meant to exist to harm or destroy others. His mischievousness came from the fact that he was unable to live the life that he had himself envisioned.

Different versions of the legend exist, and they tell different stories. In some he is a clumsy trickster, and in others a terrible and mighty spirit. Munjya are supposed to have some link with Peepal trees, and it's that very link that makes them so mysterious since the trees are extremely revered across most of India.

Most interesting of all, though, is that there is a secret to prevent the ghost from wrecking the lives of people. The method does not need any violence or other special rituals, but just courtesy and respect. One should be polite to the Munjya and make offerings at the foot of the tree so that you can establish a friendly rapport with the spirit. Naturally, it is not true at all, as the ghost cannot truly harm anyone but the story still continues to be interesting to many.

The Bottom Line

Munjya tells an ancient ghost story about a ghost inside a tree. It's a fascinating story of childhood, being alone, missed opportunities and the fear of the unknown. A legendary Munjya is a creepy spirit that haunts the Peepal trees and spooks everyone. But the film Munjya takes this myth to a different level, adding a more sinister and obsessive spirit, and creating a fun horror story based on an interesting piece of Maharashtrian folklore. The Munjya legend is a one-of-a-kind story, as it differs from other legends in that it is not a tale of a spirit that was evil from the very first day, but it is about a human who failed to become an adult. That is probably what makes Munjya so frightening, it exposes the horrors inside us all. It reveals to us that often the most terrifying sides of evil come from that which we do not understand. So, whenever you happen to walk close to a giant Peepal in the village, do not think of disturbing its tranquillity. Otherwise, who knows what Munjya can do to you?
