How to Come Up With a Book Idea That Excites You
Every writer begins with the same question. “What should I write about?”
Dreaming About Being an Author? Start Here
If you have been dreaming about becoming an author, but you are stuck right at the starting step, you are not alone. Many budding writers feel great writers just wake up and have great ideas or are born with the gift.
But the truth is much simpler. Most book ideas start small as a question, a character, a moment, even a random “what if” thought.
In this article, I will be sharing some ways that are easy and actionable to help you find a book idea that is exciting enough for you to begin writing your first novel. If you are new to the writing process, you can read How to Start Writing a Book as well. If you are completely new you may also find it useful to read Can anyone write a book? to see how the beginners get started.
Start With the “What If” Question
One of the most powerful tools in fiction writing is the “What if?” question. There are lots of great stories which start this way, let’s take a common scenario, For example:
- ‘What if’ someone you know knows your darkest secret?
- ‘What if’ there is possible to erase memories
- ‘What if’ one wakes up in a world where no one remembers one?
These questions sets the stage for instant curiosity and tension and they have a lot of story potential attached to them.
Why “What If” Works
The “What if” question takes your imagination to tall heights. In simple terms, it gets your brain thinking of new possibilities or ideas you may have never considered before. It leaves the door open for conflict, mystery and emotional stakes, the three main ingredients of a good story.
Now, try out writing 10 “What if” questions. Don’t get too concerned if some of them sound strange or unrealistic. Sometimes the weirdest ideas make for the coolest stories.
Once you have a few ideas, choose the one that you are most excited about, not the one that sounds the smartest but the one that you are curious about exploring.

Look at Everyday Life in a Different Light
Stories don’t have to be imaginative. They also come from real life. Everyday moments can make for some great story ideas, if you look at them from a writer’s perspective. Train yourself to see the world through a writer’s eyes. Think about things like,
- An unusual conversation you overheard
- A strange event in the news
- A person who has an interesting life story
- A location with a mysterious or emotional feeling
Taking Real Life and Writing Fiction
For instance, let’s say that you read about someone who went missing for 10 years and suddenly returned. A writer might ask,
- Where were they all that time?
- What secret are they hiding?
- Did something unusual/supernatural occur?
Suddenly, a mere news story is the embryo of your novel. Great writers are, first of all keen observers of life.
Create a Story Around an Interesting Character
Sometimes the best idea for a book doesn’t start with a plot. It starts with a character, as without a character, there is no story. Ask yourself questions like,
- Who is this person?
- What do they want most in life?
- So what’s stopping them from getting it?
- What secret are they hiding?
Conflict naturally builds in characters who really want something badly. If your main character doesn’t have a conflict, your story won’t be interesting. If a character breezes through everything, it’s a boring story and if they struggle, fail and have to fight through something, it’s an interesting and exciting story.
Example Character Idea
Imagine a shy librarian who writes anonymous letters that alter the lives of people but without revealing her identity.
Now ask, “What if anyone finds out the truth?”
That character idea could develop into a whole novel.
Creating an interesting character for your novel is a great place to start, since without strong characters, there isn’t a story. If you would like to know about creating characters that readers love, then take a look at our article how to create memorable characters. The better you feel emotionally about the character, the easier it is to create a story around him or her.
Combine Two Unrelated Ideas
Creativity often is the result of unlikely or unexpected combinations. Try merging two unrelated concepts. For example,
- A detective story + futuristic city
- A romance + time travel mystery
- A world of fantasy + modern technology
When the two ideas collide, they create something new and unique.
A Simple Exercise
Write two lists like below.
List 1: Genres
- Mystery
- Romance
- Fantasy
- Thriller
- Adventure
List 2: Concepts
- Time travel
- Lost memories
- Secret societies
- Artificial intelligence
- Parallel worlds
Now combine them randomly. You might get something like, “A mystery about a secret society controlling the time travel.” That’s already the beginning of a story.
Ask Yourself What Do You Love to Read
A great clue to your book idea is the type of stories you like to read. Think of your favourite books and ask yourself,
- What themes do they explore?
- What sort of characters do they have?
- What kind of world do they create?
Often your book idea will emerge from such interests and emotional methods.
Passion Leads to Great Stories
When you are writing about something that genuinely interests you, that energy comes in your writing and your readers can feel it. So rather than asking, “What book will sell?” Ask yourself, “What story do I want to tell that excites me?” That question leads to much stronger and more meaningful ideas.
Keep an Idea Notebook
Here’s something most writers know that ideas come to you at the times you least expect them. A story idea may occur to you while,
- Walking
- Listening to music
- Watching a movie
- Traveling
- Falling asleep
If you don’t get it written down it can go away.
Create Your Own Idea Bank
Carry a simple notebook or notes app on your phone. Write down things like,
- Random story ideas
- Interesting characters
- Unusual places
- Dialogue snippets
- “What if” questions
This is a gold mine of inspiration over time. Many novels are based on ideas gathered over a period of months or years. Take time to revisit your notes on a regular basis, you will often find that little ideas expand into larger ones when you look back at your notes.
The Truth About Book Ideas
Here’s some good news, If you are a new writer, your book idea doesn’t have to be perfect. Many successful novels began as simple ideas which got stronger during the writing process. What is important is not the idea, but what you do with it. The best way to find a great story is to start writing. Your idea may evolve or change or surprise you along your journey and that’s part of the magic of storytelling. Once you get an idea, the next step is learning how to plan out your story so it flows smoothly from start to finish.
