Have you come across a story that would make you shiver even thinking about walking past a banyan tree alone at night? Or even make you puke with fear at the thought of walking alone in a forest at night?
If not, here's a story that does just that. Brahma Rakshas. The Brahma Rakshas is said to be a strange and mysterious spirit that has been part of Indian supernatural tales for many decades. The Brahma Rakshas is said to be the spirit of an intellectual Brahmin who misused his sacred knowledge during his lifetime. After death, that person would become a powerful and dangerous supernatural being.
But what scared most people about this creature was its knowledge of knowing everything. It's supposed to have had access to all or most of the Holy Scriptures and mantras, which were far more intimidating than a normal ghost or spirit. But some say it was a 'mind bender', a shape-shifter, and a monster which could spook anyone, even the brave, just enough to set foot in its domain.
The Tale of Brahma Rakshas
As per Hindu mythology, a Brahma Rakshas is a learned Brahmin who used his knowledge for selfish or malicious reasons. So the myth says that if someone had divine knowledge but employed it to indulge in devilish acts, they may face a terrible fate after death, transforming into a powerful supernatural entity.
The Brahma Rakshas is not the usual ghost. It is a more evil creature that has knowledge of all the scripts, mantras and spirituality.
Its appearance was equally terrifying. Some say that it had a large head, dirty, tangled hair, glowing red eyes, and a slim and gaunt body. Others even say that it had a necklace made from bones and it hung from the limbs of a huge banyan tree.
Imagine this: You're walking alone in a dark, abandoned forest one night. Suddenly, you spot a dark, weird, like thing suspended from a banyan tree. You assume it's merely a pile of roots and/or branches, and once you level your torch towards it, you see the lengthy strands of textured hair.
And then, suddenly, the creature moves.
The legend says the Brahma Rakshas is not only hideous to behold. It is also said to have special powers. Some stories claim that it can manipulate people's minds, appear in different forms, and use its knowledge of mantras to overpower anyone who attempts to confront it.
A particularly creepy tale is that of two explorers who ventured into a forest in Karnataka even after a guard advised them not to enter after sunset. It was said that the two men who arrived at the scene saw a huge banyan tree nearby, and as they reached it, they saw something very odd on the banyan tree. The people later aimed the torchlight at it and saw the horrifying sight. Panicked, they turned and ran, but when one of them dared to look back, the monster was apparently behind them, looking at them with glowing red eyes.
One of the explorers began to chant a mantra because he thought it would save him. But in the story, the creature began to do mantras even more rapidly, and the men felt like they were having an experience with something more than they could handle.
Scared out of their minds, they pleaded, and the creature vanished, and they managed to leave the forest.
Although the story is told as if it were a true encounter in the original account, there is no other source that proves its validity. Still, this is just another case of the terrifying accounts of this legend.
Why Is This Strange Story So Interesting?
The story of Brahma Rakshas is interesting, as it is one of the few stories that are about a spooky supernatural creature. Unlike most ghost stories, where the ghost's deadly presence can be directly traced to the circumstances that led to its death, the Brahma Rakshas is associated with the idea that knowledge can be deadly when used for evil.
Throughout generations, there have been different narratives about the being. Some have narrated it as a frightful presence residing in derelict temples while some have narrated it as a being lurking in remote forests, old banyan and unfrequented ashrams.
Common horror lore also suggests that even simple prayers or efforts to scare away the creature will not hold it off. Some stories say the use of the Hanuman Chalisa or the mantra "Om Namah Shivaya" is a spiritual safeguard.
There is a significance to this story which is much deeper. Brahma Rakshas has a significance that only having knowledge does not make a person good. If this knowledge is linked to ego, greed and selfishness, then it becomes the cause of destruction.
And perhaps this is what makes this legend so creepy. It's not just about a creature living in the woods; it's the story of a person who was once honoured for his wisdom, now also feared for what he did with it.
The Bottom Line
The Brahma Rakshas is one of the most frightening of the Indian supernatural creatures, being both the creature and the think-tank.
Since then, the story has been passed down through generations, beginning as tales of some ancient temples, abandoned places, strange forests, and encounters with the terrifying beings under banyan trees. Different versions of the story still remain popular among horror and paranormal enthusiasts.
Maybe it is exactly the fact of its origins that makes the legend of the Brahma Rakshas so chilling. This isn't simply a ghost story since it connects the fear of darkness to the lesson of hubris, greed and the evil of uncontrolled knowledge.
Brahma Rakshas, a real demon, cannot be proved by any concrete evidence. But folklore need not necessarily come true to stay in people's minds. The story is still being told even today, but it has changed with every telling, but the essence has always been the same: Knowledge, without wisdom, is dangerous.
Next time you pass one of these behemoths down a dark, empty road at midnight, you can think to yourself about the story of the Brahma Rakshas, the bizarre creature said to hang upside down from the tree's branches.
